Thanks so much for your comments. I was so looking forward to your reactions :-)
there was hope, evidenced by the fact that Akito was no longering looking inward into the darkness of the Sohma house, but rather outward to the great beyond. I am very hopeful for Akito and how you worded this is, I think, a very accurate way to describe what's going on right now. Remember those scenes in chapter 117, where she is sitting at the window looking outside? The drawing shows the complete opposite of what we see in this chapter's final scene: The room where Akito is is very bright and clear, lots of white, whereas there is a very dark sky outside, lots of black and dark shadows (was it raining?). This chapter's drawing is a complete reversal: Akito is encased by black but she is looking out into lots of white space and she has one foot out the door.
There are many interesting things about this image, but I'd just like to mention two real quick:
1)Its placement right after Kyo and Tohru realize his curse is broken, which could possibly indicate that she had something to do with it? (this goes against everything I'd always thought, but looking at the scans again there was something about it that struck me).
2)The word Sayonara, especially in conjunction to Shigure's words in 128, "to commemorate parting." It seems to me that she is about to completely let go of her old self, but this also reminds me of her bet with Ren. Do you see that as playing a part in the outcome? Will Akito have to leave the Sohma's? Is "Farewell" or "Parting" to be taken as Akito leaving the old ways, or is it a more literal parting? However it happens, I am reading it as a very hopeful thing right now. Next chapter will be amazing! I can hardly wait :-)
She's as frail as ever, but there's this tallness and willowy look to her now that suits her more than the hunching she did before. "Willowy" is a beautiful word, and she does look that, which is another awesome visual clue. She is really looking to the future now, isn't she?
