(no subject)

I'm not what most people call an activist, since I usually am content to complain and whine and then complain more with my friends about how this country is going to the dump and how there should be something done about it... without actually getting up and doing anything about it. Well, this time I did do something about it.

The flyers are doing extremely well. I was actually very lucky today. There was a person talking about God (his version at least) and how He (notice, the gender?) is so against homosexual marriage (among many other things). He was ranting and speaking and sputtering, and many people were very against him. I usually pass these people by and ignore them and any hubbub surrounding the issue. But today, I stopped (after actually going into the library, with all intents to ignore) and something told me this is a great place and time to bring out the flyers. I handed them around and there was a warm reception. There were a few uninterested, but most accepted the flier with interest.

To be honest, this is the first time I've taken such an active stance. I was nervous and my heart was beating like a frightened kitten and my face felt red and I stuttered on several occasions. But... to be honest, now considering it, it felt right. I definitely don't belong on the podium and speaking about these issues, because I know I don't know nearly half-enough, but being and doing something small like this actually was more suitable for me. If only half of the fifty are affected by the flyer, then it was worth all the painful shyness.

I've gotten some chill-eyed looks, but that's to be expected. His inclusion that all homosexuals, bisexuals, and transgenders cannot be considered 'proper families' made it personal. He makes them a homogenous group, with no feeling of the individuals within. It is a great disservice to the US to have him as our representation to the world.

Speaking as an activist, I hereby welcome you into the fold.

*puts on poncy hat and takes out sword*

I hereby knight you Sir Demeter the Activist!

Well done, you! :-)

I think that people (like us) who believe in acceptance of others who may seem "different" from ourselves really *are* in the majority, but sometimes we just aren't as loud as those intolerant few who rant and rave. And unfortunately, we've now got one of those intolerant few in a position of power, but hopefully not for much longer. I have to believe that there is no way he will be re-elected - he's done so much damage to so many things (not to mention what he's done to my blood pressure *so* *many* *times* when I've turned on the news. ::grin::), and that the American people really do understand this and will make ourselves heard come November, 2004. Now, I just pray that we'll find someone to run against him who will actually be an improvement.

You inspire me to speak out about things more myself. Thanks! :-)

First off...you ROCK for taking a stand against Bush.
I totally support you! If I had the courage (which I don't) I'd be handing out fliers too against that prejudice moron we call our president. *shudder*. You go girl!

Second of all I didn't know you knew [livejournal.com profile] greensword. Shauna is a local hometown friend of mine (we went to the same high school). Dood, it's a small world afterall!

You go girl!! I don't like many of the things he's doing either, though I should keep up with the news more, bad Lily. But I respect people like you who take a stand! Even if it is small, many small actions have more effect than one big action.
