Hmmmmm good starter anime? I suggest Ranma 1/2 that was really my starter anime and look where it got me. :P
Also Tenchi Muyo (Scific); El Hazard (Scific/Fantasy); Vandread (SciFic...if you are ready for a planet of men and a planet of women. :P It does turn more serious (actually very serious) as the series goes but doesn't lose the comic edge); Dual (SciFic and one of my favorites); Inu Yasha (Fantasy/Horror/Mythos)Basically Ranma 1/2 meets Mermaid's Saga and mix well. The best of both. ^-^ ; and Slayers (Fantasy) (but I would suggest Slayers Next the second season as it was much, much better imho then the first season. )
I would even suggest Outlaw Star if you want to show something with cool space ships, big guns and action. ^-^ I love it.
About Tenchi Muyo, El Hazard, & Dual: All made by the same people so if you like one you should like them all. All very good starter ones.
If you want shoujo I would suggest Cardcaptor Sakura though sadly I have not seen it myself only read some of the manga. *frowns* From what I hear it would be a good starter up one. And a friendly intro to CLAMP. ^0^
And "Sprited Away." It is different but very good. Maybe this would be good to toss in for a second or third anime to see just to see how anime can differ. ^-^
And while I adore Escaflowne and it is my favorite anime I don't suggest it as a starter anime right away unless they are older. That anime is a bit of a thinking anime with interesting themes and ideas throughout it. It is good for both guys and girls as it mixes both elements of shoujo and shounen (but somehow my brother wasn't very keen on it. *sniffs* )
