Okay, I've basically played about thirty minutes of the game. I've gotten past the first 'big' battle, though it was more like a mini-boss than anything else. Either way, here are my thoughts on the game thus far, and whether I'll be continuing without the English version.
First things first. Gameplay-wise, it's not the greatest. I understand there are far more talented gamers than I, so I may only be bitching. With the PS2 controller, you use the left analog stick to move around, the right analog stick to change the view and the R1 button to shoot. This is really confusing at first, especially if you're not used to the whole left-will-go-right-and-vice-versa thing. Luckily, you can change this in the options menu.
I started out at normal level and was forced to go to easy as I was killed in the first ten minutes. This in itself is not bad. It isn't, because it's a good challenge for those who like shooting games. However, I don't think it had everything to do with my poor shooting skills. The camera angle is fairly awkward but that I can handle. What was difficult to control was that the camera slides like liquid over the scene, so it's hard to control where you're shooting. It definitely takes a little time to get used to it, and even then, it might be difficult.
I managed to defeat the boss, but remember, this is me doing it on easy. I'm not sure what would have happened on expert. 0_0
Okay. Now that the complaining is over...
Beautiful CGI! Absolutely gorgeous CGI. I can't believe how beautiful it was. The opening scene along was worth my hopes beause it had Yuffie rescuing Vincent. Yes, you read that right. Yuffie was the one to save Vincent off the collapsing tower in Midgar post-fight with Hojo and pre-Meteor. She was one of the people helping people evacuate Midgar and was obviously in control of herself.
... I do think she will make a fine leader of Wutai, someday.
So onward! Vincent's climbing the metal tower and he calls to Yuffie over the PHS. He asks her to look at the tower with what I'm assuming is a heat-finding scanner. When she sees that someone living is actually up there on that precarious tower, Vincent says, "Of course." (I think) He continues climbing and Yuffie says that's dangerous and (I may be roughing up the translation somewhat) that the tower is unstable. He tells her to go back to Cloud and hangs up on her. At this poin, she shouts out at the tower that it's dangerous!
=)
Vincent climbs the tower, we see Hojo's body slumped over a control panel. Vincent has this awesome expression on his face of not-quite hatred, not-quite history, not-quite anger. I can't properly describe it; it's just that beautiful. He then steadies his gun and points it at Hojo. Now, at this point, lightening strikes and either due to that or the instability of the tower, something explodes. When he looks up again, the body has disappeared. He narrows his eyes, but at this point, that's the least of his problems because the tower starts collapsing. What is Vincent to do?
Why! Depend on Yuffie, but of course!!! She's riding a flying bike and rolls up there with a good holler of, "Vincentttttttt!" He, of course, leaps on and rides her like a stallion.
*pause*
I mean, he catches the handles and controls the bike because, of course, Yuffie has terrible motion sickness and even getting up there is a trial for her. So they're floating away in the air and it's beautiful to see because it's Yuffie and it's Vincent and they're riding a bike together and OMG, that sounds like fanfiction to me.
Before the scene ends, we get a closeup of the screen Hojo was slumped over and it says - "Start..... fragment program," which, of course is part of the plotline. ;)
We then move into Kalm. We find out that Vincent likes red wine and that he has a wicked black cellphone, that something mysterious just happened in Midgar, and that Vincent is certifiably too angsty. Why he's in Kalm, we don't know, but it doesn't matter because it's a good thing he's there. Why? Well, helicopters come flying in a dropping in soldiers and dangerous doggies. They give the town (that happened to be having a festival with a distinctive European/Irish air) a good licking and Vincent comes into the rescue.
After a short moment of frothing at the mouth that Vincent "is not at level 1!" the game moves into shooting soldiers and saving townspeople. Vincent is appropriately gloomy and does save people. Blah blah blah blah.
So. When I stopped, I was still in Kalm. Overall, I'm pleased. It had Yuffie in a very good position and I'm not particularly bothered by the future Shelke/Vincent hints. Hey. I like Yuffie/Vincent. I could care less which pairing is more 'right'.
Thus, that will be all until I either a) play the rest of the game, or b) download the videos. =)
