Kyo! Tohru! Love! Kiss! AH! It's so CUTE! It's so adorable, oh my dear lord, it's so cute!
But moving straight to Akito, because my heart just about stopped at the end when it said sayonara. There was an undefiniable distance to the scene, but at the same time, there was hope, evidenced by the fact that Akito was no longering looking inward into the darkness of the Sohma house, but rather outward to the great beyond. I noticed that there was nothing drawn beyond the background tree and that it was a space of white. It could be just coincidence, but it could also indicate Akito's future.
The sadness bit though. Because Kyo and Tohru are so happy and it was just a pure, unashamed love and it's such a contrast from the first twenty volumes and it makes me happy for them, it makes me so incredibly happy, but Akito is still inside even if she's now able to look outside. For one thing, Akito's still possibly sick; it was inferred in the anime that Akito was ill due to the curse and that there was a chance she would die for the Juunishi; it's not the case here, so what is this curse? What makes it shift and change and how are the juunishi freed?
What, we have one or two more chapters left? I really hope we get some sort of closure in terms of why the curse is the way it is and why they were freed; otherwise, I'll definitely be disappointed.
And what about Shigure? And Akito? Takaya-sensei obviously has a thing for this pairing; every person is essentially resolved now! EVERYONE. Even Tohru and Kyo who were the protagonists and thus, are automatically relegated to the end for plot wrapup.
One thing makes me a bit worried. Is there a possibility that the curse does have something to do with Akito and her life? The ending, with sayonara... it made me think of possibly good things, but it also made my skin crawl, because I was suddenly filled with visions of Akito whispering it before closing her eyes and slumping to the ground. I may have read too much fanfiction, but with that possibility still looming on the horizon, I don't think I'll be to set this down. Takaya-sensei's blindsided us before and it wouldn't surprise me if she has still has a few tricks up her sleeve.
In the end though... Akito looked really pretty, didn't she? She's as frail as ever, but there's this tallness and willowy look to her now that suits her more than the hunching she did before. She really is a beautiful woman and I hope more people realize that.
Overall, beautiful chapter that tied up that last relationship thread. Didn't excite me as much as it would have a year ago, but I think it's because I know the story is finally winding down and I'm going to cry buckets over the last chapter because, well, it's a rare occasion when I'm actually there for the final release of a chapter when it's actually released. =)
On a separate note, I was rereading the last few volumes of Fruits Basket and I came upon the chapter with Kagura, Rin, and Tohru. And jeez, my heart just fricking broke. Because I love Kagura so much and it made me wish, somehow, that Kyo had loved her. Yes, yes, I know Kyo loves her in his own way, but she had wanted it so much and it was such an enormous unrequited love and it made a lump (several) in my throat.
It was the chapter where she hit Tohru for not telling Kyo and Rin had a terrible reaction to it and Kagura was level-headed enough (Kagura! My Kagura! Level-headed?) to hug her and apologize. But it wasn't that part, oh no. It was the part where Kazuma comes in and Kagura turns to him with this half-broken, half-defiant expression on her face and I realized that he'd seen her grow up with Kyo and Haru. She was as much his as any of them and I suppose that Kyo and Haru being boys, it made it easier for people to connect them with Kazuma... but Kagura's insane strength is not just from her curse; she's trained under Kazuma and she's a pro at martial arts.
And the fact that she broke down in front of Kazuma, but not anyone else, tells me just how much she trusts him.
