THE LAST CHAPTER OF FRUITS BASKET!
Nov. 22nd, 2006 10:49 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I can't believe I was reading the last chapter of Fruits Basket! I can't believe I spent twenty minutes last night taking in the chapter!
It was! It was! It was!
... strangely anticlimatic.
The chapter was basically everything that I expected. Not everything that I wanted but I'm quite spoiled, so ignore my whining. Overall, it was a tight, satisfying last chapter. Not quite what I expected from the woman who gave us a genderswitch, buckets o' angst, and an everlasting curse, but you know what? It makes me happy that the cast is happy. And when the cast is happy, it's less liable to have, oh, you know, vases being thrown and roofs being crushed and doors being smashed and you know. All that good stuff. Less Black Haru, fewer Rin-frowns, happy tears as opposed to sad ones, and the occasional comedic view!
And Akito. A couple pages of Akito, and it was bare but enough. No, we do not get a final meeting between Ren and Akito. I have a feeling that Takaya-sensei looked at her note outlines for the hypothetical confrontation, put her head in her hands, and said, "We'll pretend they never saw each other again!" and lo, the editors agreed, because Fruits Basket's popularity was waning, and the assistants agreed because they were tired of drawing dumpling-shaped human beings. At least... that's what I think. ;).
By the way. AKITO WAS IN MY LONG-AWAITED SUNDRESS AND SUNHAT! With pretty, past-the-shoulder hair and a smile that'd tempt a saint. Seriously. Not just a saint. An angel. No, wait. A VAMPIRE. Or even better! If any of my favorite male characters happened to jump into the Furuba series, they'd fall in love with her smile! GO GO CROSSOVERS!
Akito and Shigure just look so darn happy now; they were walking along and talking and Shigure's possessive HAND on her hip at the end made me sink into a puddle of gooey happiness. SOMEONE needs to write Akito/Shigure pr0n. The sweet, post-series kind. The kind where Shigure bends Akito over his work table in his house. I bet Shigure writes with Akito in mind. I bet he reads his stories to her so he can watch her squirm. I bet he drives his editor mad now with all his escaping and running to the main house so he can press her up against some corner to have his wicked, wicked way with her. I bet he takes her out for long walks on the beach. I bet he buys her things to look at her laugh. I BET HE TAKES HER SHOPPING AND HAPPILY SITS IN THE CHAIRS BY THE DRESSING ROOMS!
Shigure, you sit happily by the dressing rooms?
WHIPPED.
;)
EDIT: I went back to reread the Akito sections and HOLY FUCKING MOLY. They're married! WHAT. WHAT. WHAT.
Okay, now back to my not-so-Akito-crazed looksee.
The chapter was fairly long and packed with major and minor characters. In fact, we get some sort of resolution to all the main stories. The last chapter seems to take place a few months later, since they've all graduated and Yuki's moved out to his own place. It's really seriously cute the way he handed Machi a key to his apartment and her hesitating and him pretending to throw it out the window... =) I really like them. It's such an adorable pairing!
Haru and Rin are now happily moving along and Momiji loves teasing them, apparently. Their stories were long finished, so I suppose that may be why the three of them were packed into one scene. EDIT: They mention Tohru, I'll have to dig my dictionary out, but seeing as it's Momiji... ;)
We had an interesting couple pages for Ritsu and Kagura. And I think Ritsu is PROPOSING TO SHIGURE'S EDITOR, Mii! EDIT: no, wait! He's asking her out! Stil holy shit and all that is wonderful! They're going to have the world's most neurotic children! I felt a bit for Kagura. She's just so damn wonderful and strong. Unrequited love isn't easy to get over, but she's dealing with it and she's looking forward. I think I'd want to write a fic with her for the future. She's going to always always always remember that little boy she saw drawing omelets in the sand and Kyo's always always always going to remember the big sister-type who read to him, and the two of them are intricately linked, and that's okay. Because in a way, Kyo sees Kagura as a sister and Kagura is going to do her best to love him as family for the rest of her life.
Okay, so that makes me go a little weepy. I'm a Kagura fan! WHAT DO YOU EXPECT, HUH?
Kisa and Hiro are their old, adorable selves. Kisa gets a little weepy, but Hiro FINALLY GETS A CLUE and comforts rather than yells.
Now. Hatori. HATORI IS GOING TO OKINAWA. YES. WITH YOU-KNOW-WHO.
And it's wonderful.
Because Mayu makes him laugh, she's like a female version of the good points in Shigure and Ayame, and the two of them are going to live a happy life. I hope. But I do admit, I find it a little bit sad. Good!sad, but sad. Maybe because it was such a coincedence that they managed to cross each other's paths again. She met him as her best friend's boyfriend, but it all fell apart and now here they are. It's going to be funny imaging their wedding with Kana-chan finding it so marvelous that her old mentor and her best friend are getting married.
SOMEONE NEEDS TO WRITE THAT FIC!
Ayame and Mine are going along with their store! Not much to say about that! I kind of wanted one last brotherly love scene, but I suppose that'll be for the fics of the future.
Okay, this part made me roll around on the ground in hysterical laughter. Because SAKI AND KAZUMA ARE A PAIR NOW! Or at least, THEY'RE ON THEIR WAY THERE!!!!!!!! She's working for him! She knows exactly what she wants! GO SAKI.
That poor, poor disciple of Kazuma! He was like, "WTF sensei?" and Saki was like, "You have a problem?" and he was like, "I DON'T DARE." and it just made me cry with laughter. I mean, seriously! Everyone thought it was cute and funny that Saki finally found someone to love and that the person happened to be Kyo's father and master made it even funnier. But I don't think too many people were expecting Takaya-sensei to take the gag of making Kyo go into frothing hysterics much further. But she did and she did it gloriously because there was a scene where Kyo is looking at the two of them with an expression of glazed horror.
=) I suppose Kazuma's objections to her age were never going to be. FIC. Someone. FIC.
Ohohohoho, Kureno and Uo-chan are exchanging phone calls and it's almost bizarre but quite sweet. I'm not sure, but at the end when it's like years int he future, it seems that the little girl might be their daughter? The woman on the page didn't really look like Uo, and the man's face wasn't really viewable, but hey, maybe it was? So yes. Uo and Kureno seem to be permanently attached. And Kureno seems to have moved out.
Which brings me to a thought: how is Kureno and Akito going to look at each other from this point onward? No, seriously. For all Akito loves Shigure, there's going to be a part of her that belongs to Kureno for the rest of her life. He had her for the better part of her childhood and adolescent years. He was with her when she smashed the face into Hatori's eye, when she pushed Rin out the window, and when she slowly lost her emotional connections with her Juunishi one by one. He was there. I don't think this can be something to take lightly. Their relationship was at times so parasitic that I don't think one could have survived without the other until Tohru entered the story and go the ball rolling downhill.
And another thought; would Uo and Kureno have fallen in love if Akito wasn't in the picture. Think about this. The very first thing Uo noticed about Kureno was his uncanny resemblance to Tohru in terms of manners and ways of being. It would not have been that way if Akito and Kureno hadn't happened. They might not have even met; Kureno was on a very rare trip out to the convenience store when they bumped into each other. Would her laugh have been so rare if he'd not been attached to Akito like a chain?
It makes me wonder.
But going back to Akito and Kureno. How are do the two of them see each other now? Does he love her even more? As his daughter, as his sister, as the woman he'd devoted himself to for the better part of his life? Does she still see him on a pedestal? Is she going to always remember the fact that he gave her his absolution without any need for promises or apologies? The scene in the hospital when he put his hand on her head still makes me cry.
For me, Kureno and Akito might have had the most unique, painful, and wonderful relationship. It's a level that will be difficult to match in future shoujo series. Even Akito and Shigure rank up there. I've read a lot of shoujo in my life and never have I ever seen anything quite like these two pairings.
So. Anyways.
Now for the cream of the crop, I suppose.
Kyo and Tohru?
SOMARRIEDFORTHERESTOFTHEIRLIVES.
For one thing, I noticed that while Tohru blushes and all that, she's not in the least embarassed about their relationship. It's like she went from innocent to still-innocence. She loves Kyo and once she figured that out, she's gone all out for it. They're so damn cute together, it makes my teeth ache. The ending was a good wind down; it showed them standing together in the gardens, both older by many years and with Kyo looking eerily like Kazuma from the back. He was wearing a man's yukata and she was wearing a pretty skirt and blouse combination. But the thing was that they standing close together, holding hands and it actually made me think of the past twenty-two volumes of manga and just how damn much changed for them to be like this.
It makes me happy. ^_______^
So now, Fruits Basket has come to an end. There's no discounting of a future standalone manga volume since it's still somewhat a cash cow even with its declining popularity. Who knows? Maybe we'll get a manga series that follows Akito or one of the other members? Wouldn't that be absolutely fabulous?
Anyways. It's over, it's done, and now I want to get drunk. But I can't. Because I'm at work. And I'd throw all the alcohol up before it made me anything more than tipsy. I HAVE NO TOLERANCE.
Fruits Basket; you've given me a lot these past few years! I watched my favorite characters grow and change and I watched your style weave in and out. You gave us countless characters of interest and you gave me Akito, one of those rare characters who has garnered my love and loyalty to an-almost fanatical level. I'll remember the characters, the history, the relationship, the curse (which I still don't quite understand!). I'll remember Akito (oh, especially Akito!), Kagura and Momiji and Hatori and Shigure and Kurenoa and Tohru! I'll remember the little girl's tears and the woman's madness. I'll remember the founding of the
altar_of_akito and the eventual slowdown and apathy I had. I'll remember the sexy hand-sliding-up-the-tie move and the fact that Kakashi and Hatori have the same Japanese voice actor. I'll remember the cheery song and Chapter 97. I'll remember Akito's kimono and Akito's smiles.
You gave us vases, curses, porn, angst, wangst, hilarity, love, and too many things to count! I'd give you my kidney, but I think I need that, so I'll give you my heart instead! You know! The metaphorical one that doesn't need an electric pulse to keep going!
... I think it's time for me to get off this computer. ;)
