They were a bit liberal with the story in DoC, but FFVII came out in 1997 and I suppose a bit of tweaking to the story was necessary. I'm actually okay with canon-changing as long as they state it and create a book where, ideally, all the changes are noted. The FFVII Ultimania guides give us most, if not all.
I have to admit, whenever I think of Gackt in DoC, I want to roll my eyes. In the end though, from a distant perspective, the song wasn't actually that bad. The singer sucks, but the song was okay. =)
