There were some stupid decisions about fandom, privacy, and ads and probably other things I'm forgetting that drove a lot of people away from livejournal. Dreamwidth was set up by fans for fans, probably after the rash of deleted journals and communities on LJ that were wrongly being associated with pedophilia.
