Well...

Hm...

Yeah...

I foresee Yuki/Kyo fics for years to come arising from this particular chapter. =)

That said, I loved the layout of the whole chapter, ranging from humorous moments to outright raw breakdowns. And Yuki, oh lord, I love Yuki. I have never liked him as much as this current chapter due to his ability to see what's before him but at the same time, not allowing it to take over his life like it has for Kyo and Akito. It's partly due to the efforts of Tohru and those around him, but if he hadn't had the strength, there would have been no use.

And oh. I haven't seen Hatori and Akito in the same room for a while now and the unreadable looks that Hatori and Shigure were giving her, after she said that nothing was wrong... I keep wondering. Is the shit going to hit the fan after all this. We see Rin, Hiro, and Momiji in reaction in the ending panels. Why those three? Why not Kagura or Ritsu or even Ayame?

Does it imply that while they all have some fear and underlying dislike of Akito, those three would be the only ones who might do something about it? Or is it suggesting something else? Takaya-sensei seems to have a thing for loyalty that goes beyong family bonds. Loyalty that transcends self-preservation. We see it most clearly in Rin and Tohru, who would give anything to keep others (well, less so in the case of Rin, who reserves that special spot for Haru) safe. We're also well-aware of the fact that the older Juunishi tend to say very little against Akito.

From Kagura to Shigure, the six oldest Juunishi are also portrayed as the six least likely to openly criticize or go against Akito. When Kagura's mom said that Akito was going to the beach house and she didn't want Kagura near him, Kagura's reaction wasn't about Akito. It was about how angry she was at Shigure for not telling her (which sometimes makes me think she suspects Shigure's, er, doings on the side) instead of the danger of Akito. I have never seen Ayame badmouth or even bring up Akito, even when his little brother is bleeding from a thrown vase. When Kana's wedding was going on, it was a perfect time for Ayame to bring up Akito to criticize, but he didn't. He focused on Hatori and Kana. Not on the fact that Akito was the one who'd ultimately been responsible for where the two had ended up.

But where does this loyalty lead them? Akito has undergone a sharp transformation since the first time we met her. Once Tohru is able to explain what happened, it'll become clear that Akito had, for once, not been responsible for her accident. Maybe she's already told Yuki that the cliff had broken up under her feet. Which, ironically, I think was being brought back from the very first couple chapters when her tent was buried under a mudslide.

Akito says she's 'fine'. But the last few chapters have obviously done something to her. Something that isn't readily apparent. For one thing, she has not demanded anyone absolve her for anything. For another, Akito hasn't thrown a tantrum, told someone to stay with her, or even say that she wasn't the one at fault. She just simply... sat there.

What is Akito thinking about? What is she seeing that no one else sees? What is Hatori and Shigure thinking about? Are they wondering about how far she has gone? Are they curious about what really happened out there? Or are they tired of Akito? The latter makes me go cold, but I don't think so. The loyalty of the older Juunishi is unquestionable. But it's whether they understand Akito or not that is at stake here.

Because Yuki has received a true resolution to his story in Furuba. Kyo and Tohru are quickly moving toward their own.

And Akito?

... Furuba just might end up with a new protagonist. 0_0

All said and done, I liked the zigzag of Takaya-sensei. I am now waiting feverishly for the next part.

I haven't seen the chapter yet, but all of this keeps this little voice in the back of my mind saying "what if Tohru got amnesia from that fall", because, like you said, the cliff coming apart below her is extremely reminicent of the first time they all met. It gives me this eery feeling of a plot loop that Tohru hit her head hard enough to think that the last thing she remembered was the mud slide happening because of the tent. After all, we haven't seen Tohru yet.

I highly, highly doubt that would happen, but it makes an extremely fun road someone could take with a fanfiction. Really, if that happened where would that leave Akito, or Kyou for that matter? They would really end up screwed up.

Gah, Takaya is pulling on my soul with Akki. I just want her to be resolved, she has so many strings attached to her. *dies*
