While Proposition 8 failed to pass (so far) in California, in Arizona and Florida, constitutional amendments that recognize marriage as between one man and one woman, unfortunately succeded.

As of this morning, Arkansas is banning unmarried partners from adopting children (and thus targeting gay couples) and it's one of those things that I hate; they use what they believe is neutral language to present a bill that does nothing but discriminate against two different groups of people. They make it about the children, when it's so much more about their own bigotry and intolerance. Children my ASS.

Happily, both South Dakota and Colorado rejected the measures to ban abortion in most cases. South Dakota is probably the biggest relief because the same bill was introduced in 2006 (remember THAT?) but without the amendments they included this time around (it's now OKAY TO GET AN ABORTION IF YOU WERE RAPED AND/OR A PRODUCT OF INCEST. GEE. THANKS). Some people thought the measure might pass this time around because of the amendments, but logic apparently won out for once.

For my own state Washington, Democrat incumbent Gregoire has been projected to be the winner, which is a tremendous relief if you live in our state and have seen Dino Rossi campaigning. He skeeves me out and besides that, I'm in disagreement with him over most of the major social issues. Ho.

We now have:

- The right to die.
- Another small increase in our already-high sales tax (but since this is supporting our mass-transit plan, I'm okay with it).

So basically?

THIS HAS BEEN A REALLY GOOD YEAR FOR ME TO COME BACK TO AMERICA. XD

Whatwhat? When did CA change? Prop 8's been passing, did it fail after all? *hopeful*

The unmarried partner thing fucking sucks. It's not just gay couples, which is bad enough, but say we were from CO instead of WA, then [livejournal.com profile] pyrate_queen, who wants to adopt a kid if she doesn't find someone she likes enough to have one with because, well, she'd be an awesome mom, couldn't. SUCKY.

Last I read on CNN, it seems that Prop 8 is losing, heading for a narrow defeat. But I think not all the numbers are in yet, so I'm waiting on that. There have been a lot of conflicting reports. It's like they think if they report it one way or another, it'll make it true.

we were from CO instead of WA, then pyrate_queen, who wants to adopt a kid if she doesn't find someone she likes enough to have one with because,

EXACTLY. It's not just gay couples, but singles. It discriminates against single people who might not feel the urge to marry/procreate/whatever, but they might still want children. I know plenty of people who love children and want children, but don't seem themselves in any semblance of a relationship.

What I hated most about that bill, was how it was worded. They're keen on banning gay couples from adopting children and that's basically all it is. That single women and men would be included in that happens to be some sort sick cherry on top of the gross sundae for them.

Sadly, as of just a little bit ago, it appears like Prop 8 is going to pass *sigh*

We definitely have a 50/50 with good vs. bad measures being passed. I'm just really saddened that ALL of teh anti-gay measures seem to be passing. It would have been nice if at least one of them had failed. *sigh*

Damn, really? I just checked Google news a half hour ago and it's back to passing?

UGH THIS IS SO RIDICULOUS. JFEIWJRIOEJWOIFJE:WLFE

As of now, that's how it's looking. It's completely mind boggling, is what it is.

... seriously ironic. America is being lauded for it's historic night, how it's promising that anyone can be anything and we have two states deny rights to a group of people. REALLY EFFING IRONIC.

It would be a big win for the side of sanity if CA DIDN'T go the way of Arizona or Florida, but I think at the end of the day we are going to see three states (two major population holders) with marriage bans. It's a sad, sad thing. I guess we can't hope for a clear-across the board change for everyone, all at once, huh? *sigh*

That's true, i guess. It's just so disappointing, especially after the phenomenal high we had yesterday night.

And I can't believe California went the way it did.

I voted NO on Amendment 2 here in Florida, but no luck: 62% said YES. =(

"Hooray, we can write discrimination into the constitution!"

It's effing ironic; everyone's claiming that America has proved itself and one, possibly two, state is disenfranchising a group of people. The irony kills me.

The Colorado measure was fucking bat shit. I mean seriously, no good could ever come of calling every fertilized egg a person and giving it the full legal rights there of. It's absolutely just insane and I'm glad we had the sense to strike it down.

Especially in light of the fact that, um...lots of other states have a) a) legalized gay marriage, b) elected minority heads of state, and c) elected female heads of state.

So while Obama's election is indeed historic for America, it isn't quite as awesome when one looks at the country in an international context.
