I'm going to have a steady (probably weekly) anime night at my apartment.

Suggestions on what to show? I can dl just about anything that's not been licensed and I can buy everything else on Amazon (do people know whether the other anime DVD sites deliver to Japan?). I have some ideas, but what would people suggest for a good starter anime? And no, I'm not going to show DBZ or Sailor Moon (though I kind of want to show Sailor Moon. Good stuff, good stuff). I'm willing to go for almost any show, but some of the people attending are anime newbies, and I don't want to shock them into never watching anime again. ~_^

I'm such a request-whore.

But yes! Just toss out your anime names to me!

And by the way; while I have found people into yaoi and slash, I unfortunately will be unable to show them things like Sukisyo or Loveless or even Yami no Matsuei. =( Muraki would have been so fun to watch.

hmmm. i consider fruits basket and cowboy bebop to be good "starter" animes, but i know you hate fb, and i understand cowboy bebop wasn't too popular in japan... *coughs*

what about tactics? or trinity blood. trinity blood is getting veryvery good. honey and clover is PURE LOVE, but, ah, not really for everyone or a starter anime.

mmm, saiyuki has bloodshed and you have to want to see it to see it slash, so that's kinda universal...

d.n. angel combines cute and sexy and actiony.

and others.

^_^

and OH! only thought of it when i went to select an icon! hikaru no go! ♥ ^_~

XD

I LOVE Honey and Clover... and hey! I have the first thirteen or so eps dled! Maybe I can show that to them... ooh.

I was thinking Eva or CB first, because they're excellent starter anime with elements that will immediately draw people in. Hopefully. They're just the slightest cliche, but that's what makes them classic. =) I was thinking of Paranoia Agent, but I think I'll wait a while until I show that.

How about Spirited Away or Kiki's Delivery Service?

Tenchi Muyo was a winner for me, during my beginner days. Also I think Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha or Cardcaptor Sakura would be fine starters.

Oh man, Ranma. I had forgotten all about that. !!! I remember watching the OAV's and laughing my arse off. XD

Most people have seen Spirited Away and I think Kiki's Delivery Service has too slow of a pacing for the guys in the group (and it looks like there just might be more guys than girls...)

What's the age range and gender balance--(i.e, how many girls and boys)?

If there's boys involved, start off with something with action to get their attention. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Ruroni Kenshin, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, and such. Those also have enough comedy to be interesting to girls, as well.

If the gathering is mainly or completely girls maybe something a little more shoujo like Fruits Basket, Escaflowne, Fushigi Yuugi, ummmm...I don't know too many shoujo off the top of my head, really... ^_^;;;

I suggest animes that have good endings (FB is not a great ending, but it's has some closure). Either happy or sad. Movies like Grave of the Fireflies and animes like Emma which have endings that leave you in the lurch, should probably be avoided for first time watchers.

Good anime movies for people of our age group (I'm guessing they are)...I think Kiki's Delivery Service would be too young for a first time watcher--Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away would be okay. Spriggan is a great movie, too. Jin-Ron teeters on that bad ending warning. ^_^ Maybe later on...

Other series for both genders I recommend: Generator Gawl, Dual!, Full Metal Alchemist, Samurai 7, Samurai Champloo... Most of these and the ones I said above are geared towards a more mature audience. For younger audiences I'd go with things like Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter, One Piece (though I haven't seen too much of it myself), Yakitate Japan (have I told you how much I adore you for letting me know about that wierdass series?)...don't know too many younger animes off the top of my head, either. Other than ones that will get you funny looks over here in America; Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.

A suggestion for you. If this is going to be a weekly thing, figure out how much time they're going to set aside for it then plan to play one or two episodes from how ever many series you can fit in to that time. (So day one, start with two episodes of one series, then switch to another; the next week start with episode three and four of the first series, etc. See if it's something they like and after the first two weeks or so you can scrap a series or two if they don't like them.) It's how my college anime club kept everyone happy and broadened our interests. It also helps keep things from getting tedious, as some animes tend to over do things like battle scenes and such.

I'd say that's 'my two cents', but really that's like five dollar's worth of pennies! ^__________________^

(have I told you how much I adore you for letting me know about that wierdass series?)...

NO! I love this series and you love this series and we should totally bake bread together when I'm back stateside. ~_^

Yeah; Emma is great, but the ending is something to be desired. Same for Fruits Basket, and Grave. (though man, Grave would be the perfect thing to show right now, it being post-anniversary) I was thinking of Millenium Actress because, well, GOD I LOVE THAT MOVIE. IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL IT HURTS.

Samurai Champloo: yeah, besides CB, Trigun, and Eva, that was one of the choices.

Slayers and Magic Knight Rayearth were two of my favorite starters... Rayearth is very much a shoujo series though, if you're not looking for that sort of thing.

SLAYERS! OF COURSE! I'd forgotten about that series too!

*knocks head*

Whoa, this request has reminded me of classic anime I'd completely forgotten. XD

Escaflowne is a really great starter, and you could probably get away with Fullmetal Alchemist if they don't mind some initial blood. ANY Miyazaki movie is a GREAT start, and yes, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun are great series to share.

I'd try to stay away from any show that's been merchandized to death like InuYasha, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-oh, etc, just because those are bad examples of ok shows that might have had a chance, but were just taken over by OOO BUY THIS!!! But the rest might not be bad. DNAngel is a good choice, a little too much Shoujo, but the show balances itself out pretty quickly.

I'm going to stay away from Fullmetal, mostly because it's an anime that starts out so well and the ends up so bad. ;_; and the manga was so good too.

CB and Trigun are top faves, and most of them haven't seen it so that would be a huge plus. XD

Hmmmmm good starter anime? I suggest Ranma 1/2 that was really my starter anime and look where it got me. :P

Also Tenchi Muyo (Scific); El Hazard (Scific/Fantasy); Vandread (SciFic...if you are ready for a planet of men and a planet of women. :P It does turn more serious (actually very serious) as the series goes but doesn't lose the comic edge); Dual (SciFic and one of my favorites); Inu Yasha (Fantasy/Horror/Mythos)Basically Ranma 1/2 meets Mermaid's Saga and mix well. The best of both. ^-^ ; and Slayers (Fantasy) (but I would suggest Slayers Next the second season as it was much, much better imho then the first season. )

I would even suggest Outlaw Star if you want to show something with cool space ships, big guns and action. ^-^ I love it.

About Tenchi Muyo, El Hazard, & Dual: All made by the same people so if you like one you should like them all. All very good starter ones.

If you want shoujo I would suggest Cardcaptor Sakura though sadly I have not seen it myself only read some of the manga. *frowns* From what I hear it would be a good starter up one. And a friendly intro to CLAMP. ^0^

And "Sprited Away." It is different but very good. Maybe this would be good to toss in for a second or third anime to see just to see how anime can differ. ^-^

And while I adore Escaflowne and it is my favorite anime I don't suggest it as a starter anime right away unless they are older. That anime is a bit of a thinking anime with interesting themes and ideas throughout it. It is good for both guys and girls as it mixes both elements of shoujo and shounen (but somehow my brother wasn't very keen on it. *sniffs* )

p.s. I LOVE YOUR new Bleach icon!!

From: [identity profile] demeter918.livejournal.com
Not my icon, but yeah, it's fab. =) I wish I could make cool icons like that. XD

I never did like Tenchi very much. I think the harem of girls for the one nerdy guy genre is overdone and if it had been for Ryoko, I don't think I'd have ever paid much attention to it. Which is pretty sad. But yeah; SLAYERS. MUST LOVE SLAYERS.

Hey... I never saw Outlaw Star... maybe it's a good time to get into it.

Oh I forgot "Crest of the Stars". Another deeply SciFic series. It is also serious as people do die in it (but not bloodly). It is more for older and more hard core science fiction. But very likeable. It is like watching a live action science fiction show. It does have a lot of talking scenes mixed in with some action. I don't think it would scare off anyone unless they didn't like science fiction.
